Advertising executive Madonna Badger uses four criteria to
determine whether an ad objectifies women: Prop: Does the woman have a
choice or voice in this situation? Part: Is she reduced to just a
sexually provocative body part? Plastic: Is the image manipulated to the
extent that the look is not humanly achievable? What if: Would you be
comfortable to see your sister, best friend or yourself in this image?
These questions shape the creative process at Badger & Winters, the
advertising agency Badger founded in 1994 that specializes in

In the early-1700s, King Philip V of Spain was suffering from a
debilitating mental illness we can today recognize as bipolar disorder.
But back in the 18th century, his alternating spells of frenzy and
stupor were a mystery presumably best handled by abdication — at least
until his wife, the queen, hears the renowned opera singer Farinelli in
London and brings him back to Madrid. Farinelli’s angelic voice (he was
castrated by his brother at age 10) seems to bring the King back to
life. And so Farinelli remained in Madrid, like a songbird in a cage,
performing for an audience of one for nin...

The phrase “jazz trio at the Kennedy Center” does not often come
with the caveat “bring earplugs.” But, then, that jazz trio has never
before been Harriet Tubman (emcee Kevin Struthers took pains to
introduce them as “Harriet Tubman, the band”), who made their debut
Saturday night at the KC Jazz Club with a blare of noisy and often
free-form electric jazz. Through the first set’s assault, however, they
maintained a (frequently surprising) grip on a strong current of melody.
In fact, that current was apparent even before the blare was. Guitarist
Brandon Ross and bassist Melvin Gibbs opened t...

We hope Fox kept the receipt. The network’s attempt at turning the
1983 beloved holiday classic A Christmas Story into a live TV musical
was bashed by viewers Sunday evening. And it turns out the ratings were
terrible too — the three-hour telecast was seen by 4.5 million viewers
and delivered a 1.5 rating among adults 18-49. Compare that to Fox’s
production of Grease Live last year which had 12.2 million viewers and a
4.3 rating. Heck, even NBC’s notorious Peter Pan Live from 2014 did
better than this (9.2 million, 2.4). A Christmas Story looks like the
