Lentil soup, swirled with rings of yogurt and seasoned with
spices, is a fitting start to any meal at Bistro Aracosia in the
Palisades. (Dayna Smith/For The Washington Post) The recipients of
sambosa goshti at Bistro Aracosia in the Palisades get a little lesson
in Afghan culture when the starter is presented. “We eat sweet
appetizers with unsweetened tea and salty ones with sweet tea,” says
Taliha Masroor, the daughter of owner Omar Masroor. The backgrounder
explains why there’s a dusting of powdered sugar and ground cardamom on
the pan-fried turnovers filled with juicy ground beef, a flav...

Miranda Rosenfelt says that one of her direct supervisors forced
her to perform oral sex in a basement pantry. (Essdras M Suarez/For The
Washington Post) If you’re a woman, what makes a restaurant dangerous
isn’t the sharp knives or the hot griddle: It’s an isolated area of the
kitchen, like the dry storage pantry. That’s where Miranda Rosenfelt,
31, then a cook at Jackie’s restaurant in Silver Spring, was headed one
day seven years ago to help out with inventory, at the request of one of
her direct supervisors, who she says had been harassing her for months.
When she walked into the narrow...

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Finnish police reprimanded a man for
traveling in a car boot to hide his meeting with Prime Minister Juha
Sipila during a government crisis last summer, saying this was breach of
the traffic code. A police statement did not name the man in the boot,
but in effect indicated the traveler was State Secretary Samuli
Virtanen, who is also the deputy to Foreign Minister Timo Soini. The
meeting took place in June, a day after Virtanen's co-ruling Finns party
had elected anti-immigration hardliners as its new leaders. The
government was close to collapse until a group of politi...

A recipe for success: Frozen bird in by 9 in the morning, and you
can be carving by 4. (Deb Lindsey /For The Washington Post) When
producing a Thanksgiving meal becomes a last-minute affair — and there
are plenty of reasons that happens, no judging — you might think getting
a bronzed bird on the table presents the toughest challenge. Nah,
you’ve got this. Cooking a whole turkey from a rock-solid, frozen state
can yield respectable results. If you stick it in the oven by 9 in the
morning, it can be ready for carving by 4. There is a bit of a learning
curve, though, and because you probably o...

My electronic health record (EHR) vendor recently decided to quit
the marketplace. Despite the major impact to many medical practices,
SOAPware (owned by DOCS, Inc.), delivered the news that they would
shutting down at the end of this coming February, with a short message
embedded in a screen. I had stuck with them since 2004—though the
company’s transformation from a basic electronic data record, to its
current full-featured iteration, which handles most of the current
regulatory nightmares. This software had faxing, electronic prescription
capability (including EPCS, the new Electronic Pr...

Letty (Michelle Dockery) really did learn from the best. In
Sunday’s episode of Good Behavior, Letty, Javier (Juan Diego Botto), and
Jacob (Nyles Julian Steele) visit Letty’s grandmother Alice (Holland
Taylor) to ask for her help with a $50,000 problem. And by the looks of
the exclusive clip above, they’ve come to the right place. “You need to
see the house,” Alice raves, leading Letty and Javier through an
extravagant home. “We just use it to make people jealous.” This isn’t
Alice’s first rodeo with her dear “Letitia” — she sees right through
Javier’s fake backstory, and she knows her gran...

Cast members rehearse for the immersive theater show “Inside Pussy
Riot,” which runs through Dec. 24. (Shannon Jensen Wedgwood for The
Washington Post) LONDON — A punk protest requires meticulous planning.
On a gray afternoon in early November, strips of black-and-white tape
divide a warehouse floor into sections labeled “Cathedral,” “guards” and
“holding area.” Three or four women wearing jeans, sweatshirts and
multicolored balaclavas (a.k.a. ski masks) stand in each square, holding
scripts. One mimes striking down a gavel, like a judge. Another seems
to be posing for a mug shot. A pair do...

PARIS (AP) — France's Foreign Ministry said a Saudi-led coalition
has "extracted" two French female journalists from war-torn Yemen.
Ministry spokeswoman Agnes Romatet-Espagne said Foreign Minister
Jean-Yves Le Drian discussed how to bring them back safely to Riyadh
during his visit to Saudi Arabia on Thursday. The journalists are
freelancers working for Paris Match magazine. She said they were back in

The upcoming graphic novel Illegal couldn’t be more timely.
Written by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin and illustrated by Giovanni
Rigano (Artemis Fowl), Illegal powerfully visualizes the current
struggles being faced by refugees and emigrants. The book centers on Ebo
and Kwame, siblings who flee from Ghana. We follow their journey as
they move across Africa, over the Mediterranean Sea, and hopefully to a
safe haven in Europe. They’re hoping to reunite with their sister;
through stunning, intimate visuals, we experience their dangerous trek
and the emotions behind it. (See a video preview her...

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Authorities on the Greek island of Lesbos
have called a strike and are urging residents to take part in
anti-government protests to press for a change a European Union policy
of containment of refugees and migrants on Greece's islands. In a
statement, the island's municipality called the strike for Monday
against the policy of turning Lesbos into an "island prison." Greece's
government and the EU have ignored pleas from the mayors of Lesbos, and
the nearby islands of Chios, Samos, Leros and Kos, to allow more
migrants to travel to the Greek mainland, resulting in major...
