President Robert Mugabe and his family are "safe and sound," the military of Zimbabwe says — but his decades in power have seemingly come to an end, after Mugabe, 93, was forcefully pushed aside. Both the ruling party and the military insist there was no coup. "We are only targeting criminals around him who are committing crimes that are causing social and economic suffering in the country in order to bring them to justice," the Zimbabwe Defense Forces said on Wednesday, adding, "As soon as we have accomplished our mission we expect that the situation will return to normalcy." But it will b...

In September 1944 African-American soldiers from the US Army’s “Buffalo” division helped liberate Cascina from German forces retreating north into the Apennine mountains of Tuscany. For the next 70 years, the town of 45,000 people in the Arno River valley near Pisa was run by leftwing administrations. The region became a byword in Italy for racial tolerance and social democratic politics. Then in June 2016 something surprising happened: Cascina, whose postwar fortunes were built on the now-struggling furniture sector, elected Susanna Ceccardi, a 29-year-old rightwing firebrand from the Euro...

Insert celebratory “Hands Down” reference here: Dashboard Confessional is back. The Chris Carrabba-led band announced Wednesday that they’re releasing a new album in February, their first since 2009’s After the Ending. This record will be titled Crooked Shadows and features the just-released lead single “We Fight,” streaming below. “When I wrote ‘We Fight,’ I thought it was just about the music scene that I came up in — a place where people who’d never quite fit in anywhere felt they actually belonged,” Carrabba said in a statement. “When we began playing the song live on our summer tour, I...

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved on Wednesday a new treatment made by Ultragenyx Pharmaceutical Inc for a rare genetic disorder that can dramatically reduce life expectancy. The drug is designed to treat patients with mucopolysaccharidosis type VII, or MPS VII, a condition caused by an enzyme deficiency that affects tissue and organs, including the heart, and stunts growth. The disorder affects fewer than 150 patients worldwide. The drug, Mepsevii, was given to 23 patients who were treated for up to 164 weeks, the FDA said. After 24 weeks, patients taking the drug ...

In 2015, former Vice President Joe Biden had everything lined up to jump into the Democratic primary for president. He had been laying the groundwork for a presidential campaign since 2013, retaining strategists from the Obama campaign, creating fundraising plans, and identifying staff in key states like Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. Then he reconsidered, in large part due to his son’s death. But his new book, Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose, makes it clear just how close Biden came to running in the primary that still divides the Democratic Party. There’s p...

Dylan has never been one for engaging with an audience, but over the years that disinterest has compounded. (Claxton Telltale) It’s hard to know what to make of Bob Dylan these days. In that sense, nothing has changed. Over his six-decade career, the Hibbing, Minn., songwriter has perfected inscrutability — winning over devoted fans with his genius and frustrating them with his studied mysteriousness. Even his autobiography reads like a fable. At the Anthem Tuesday night, the 76-year-old Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner only added to his reputation for intrigue, performing a 20-song show tha...

By Divya Grover (Reuters) - Acorda Therapeutics Inc said five people died in trials for its Parkinson's disease drug, the latest in a series of setbacks for the drugmaker, sending its shares down 38 percent. Acorda was pinning its hopes on the success of the drug, tozadenant, as it copes with the loss of exclusivity on its flagship multiple sclerosis drug Ampyra and the U.S. regulator's refusal to review its other Parkinson's disease drug, Inbrija. The company said it would stop enrolling patients for two long-term safety studies on tozadenant after it found seven cases of sepsis, a life-th...

That sound you hear all across the country is the brains of millions of home chefs kicking into high gear as they begin contemplating preparing Thanksgiving dinner for their loved ones in a week. (Full disclosure: I attempted to make my wife help me plan a menu in mid-September, when we learned her parents would be joining us for the big day, so my mind is one of those millions whirring away.) But the stereotype of the bland, dried-out, mushy mash of starches that typifies so many American Thanksgivings still holds true for even some of the best home chefs out there. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson condemned what he called "widespread atrocities" against Myanmar's Rohingya minority on Wednesday morning, but stopped short of calling for new sanctions against the government that is committing them. It's the latest sign of the Trump administration's troubling hesitance to press human rights concerns during a pair of high-profile trips through Asia. At least Tillerson, unlike the White House, acknowledged there is a problem to address. In a joint press conference with Myanmar’s civilian leader, Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, he noted that the “...
