(Illustration by Peter Horvath for The Washington Post/Based on

Aldean walked into the glittering Schermerhorn Symphony Center at the
live taping of CMT’s Artists of the Year special. It was mid-October,
two weeks after a gunman started firing bullets during Aldean’s set at
the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas, killing 58 people and
injuring hundreds more in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S.
history. In the days after the horror, Aldean visited victims in the Las
Vegas hospital and appeared on “Saturday Nig...

By Hans-Edzard Busemann and Paul Carrel BERLIN (Reuters) -
Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed confidence on Friday that three party
groups trying to form a new German government can reach a coalition
deal, and top leaders plan to meet again on Monday. With her former
coalition partners, the Social Democrats (SPD), determined to go into
opposition, Merkel is pushing for a coalition with the Greens and the
pro-business Free Democrats (FDP), after her conservatives bled support
to the far right in an election last month. "I think difficult
deliberations lie ahead of us in the coming days," Mer...

Within an hour of landing at the Buffalo airport in July, I am
helping my little sister get to the bathroom at Kenmore Mercy Hospital
after she has been revived with Narcan. I don’t know it yet, but Jenny
will die in six days. She has just turned 44. Her estranged drug-addict
husband will take her body from the hospital against her last wishes,
and we won’t know her final resting place. No wake; no funeral. I will
be on a flight home to Washington in eight days, stunned. Since then,
every day I’ve tried to understand how my sister, who lived a
middle-class suburban life with her two childre...

Republicans in Congress unveiled their tax-reform proposal
Thursday, calling for a significant reduction in the corporate tax rate,
the elimination of the estate tax and the creation of a 25 percent rate
for people who pay corporate taxes through the individual code.
(Wealthier U.S. citizens often do this to reduce their tax obligation.)
According to the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, those three
proposals alone will deplete the U.S. Treasury of nearly $1.5 trillion
over the next 10 years, so the plan also offers ways to offset that
reduction. [Analysis: The GOP’s bill is ‘a sen...

The Trump administration told the Supreme Court Friday that
discipline could be warranted for lawyers for an undocumented teenage
immigrant seeking an abortion because they misrepresented the status of
her request in a way that kept the government from asking the high court
to intervene. In a highly unusual filing reflecting the pre-eminence of
abortion politics, Solicitor General Noel J. Francisco called out ACLU
lawyers representing the girl, identified in court papers as Jane Doe.
The document said the girl’s lawyers knew that the Justice Department
planned to ask the Supreme Court on Oc...

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — The U.S. military for the first time has
conducted two airstrikes against Islamic State group fighters in
Somalia, where the group is a growing presence in a country long
threatened by the al-Qaida-linked extremist group al-Shabab. The U.S.
Africa Command said the two drone strikes killed "several terrorists" in
northeastern Somalia, with the first around midnight local time and the
second later Friday morning. The U.S. said the strikes were carried out
in coordination with Somalia's government. Local officials confirmed
the strikes. At least six missiles struck in...

But the drama for the former Taliban hostage and admitted deserter
isn’t over. A military judge just ruled that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, the US
Army soldier who disappeared from his base in Afghanistan in 2009 and
ended up captured by the Taliban, won’t serve any jail time — even
though he pleaded guilty on October 16. However, Bergdahl received a
dishonorable discharge from the Army, which means he won’t get health
benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Bergdahl also had his
rank reduced from sergeant to private, the lowest Army rank. Finally, he
will have to pay $1,000 per month for...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California Gov. Jerry Brown joined lawmakers
to request $7.4 billion in federal funding for wildfire relief and
recovery efforts following a deadly cluster of fires that killed more
than 40 people and left thousands without housing. In a letter sent to
the White House on Friday, Brown joined California's two U.S. Senators
and 39 members of the California congressional delegation to urge
President Donald Trump and Congress to quickly adopt a third
disaster-related appropriations bill to support the state's recovery.
Brown said the funding would go toward cleanup and prog...
