Witnesses describe shock of the shooting at a congressional baseball game practice in Virginia
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana and four others were shot during a congressional baseball practice. ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Five people, including Republican Majority Whip Steve Scalise and a congressional staffer, were taken to hospitals after a shooting Wednesday morning at a practice for the annual congressional baseball game. One bystander also said people on the scene described the shooter asking people on the ballfield whether they were Republicans or Democrats before calmly and “deliberately” drawing a weapon and opening fire.

Dem and GOP baseball managers announce game will go on, call for change in national ‘mood’
Barton
and Doyle, the managers of the Republican and Democratic baseball
teams, also said they added a fund for the families of fallen police
officers to the list of charities the baseball game will benefit, to
recognize the U.S. Capitol Police officers who saved lives Wednesday.
Barton was on the field when a gunman shot and wounded Majority Whip
Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Calif., and four others: a congressional staffer, a
lobbyist and two police officers. Barton said it appeared the man
identified as the shooter, James T. Hodgkinson, was motivated by
political animosity toward Republicans. “Members are not looked at as
people anymore, we’re kind of looked at — I don’t want to say as
targets, but people think they can come to our town hall meetings and
say just the most obnoxious things and think we won’t feel it
personally,” Barton said.

Association, representing 370 councils in England and Wales, says extra
safety checks have been organized across local authorities, including

Searching for conscience in Trump’s Cabinet
Every
week, it seems, I wake up thinking I’m going to write about something
else — maybe Dennis Rodman’s latest mission to North Korea, or the
melting Antarctic ice shelf. Donald Trump is the sinkhole beneath our
national dialogue, sucking up everything but the sky. This week started
with a report that Trump was now furious at the Justice Department’s
special counsel, Robert Mueller, and was considering a move to get him
fired — a report Trump himself did nothing to refute, and that the White
House belatedly half-denied.

GOP Rep. Sanford on Va. shooting: Trump partially responsible ‘for the demons that have been unleashed’
President
Trump’s rhetoric is “partially” to blame ratcheting up political
tensions in the U.S., Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., said Thursday on
MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” connecting the commander in chief to Wednesday’s
shooting at a GOP baseball practice in Northern Virginia. “The president
is at least partially — again, not any way totally, but partially — to
blame for demons that have been unleashed,” Sanford said, noting that
although Trump was not responsible for the shooting, his coarse rhetoric
and encouragement of violence have fostered aggression and a lack of
civility in the heated political climate. “If you let these forces play
out, I think we end up at a very, very bad spot,” Sanford said.

Pelosi: It’s ‘outrageous’ for Republicans to blame Scalise attack on Democrats
Minority

the left’s rhetoric for Wednesday’s attack on a GOP congressional

including Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., who is in critical

Republican colleagues are outrageous, beneath the dignity of the jobs
they hold, beneath the dignity of the respect that we would like
