Balian (Orlando Bloom) è un giovane maniscalco che ha perso la famiglia.
Un giorno gli si presenta il nobile crociato Goffredo (Liam Neeson), che gli dichiara di essere suo padre e di volerlo portare con lui in Terra Santa.
Dopo un momento di indecisione Balian decide di intraprendere quel viaggio. Ma durante il cammino Goffredo viene ferito a morte e Balian si ritrova da solo a dover difendere la strada per la Città Santa percorsa dai pellegrini.
A seguito di un complotto ordito dagli alti dignitari della città, Balian dovrà affrontare l'esercito dei Saraceni, con a capo Saladin (Ghassan Massoud), per evitare che i musulmani conquistino Gerusalemme…
